Laura is almost at the end of her first trimester. She has been nauseous for most of those 3 months and her diet has consisted of crackers and ginger ale. Now that her nausea has subsided she is ready to start eating again.
“After 3 months of practically living on crackers and ginger ale, I am feeling really hungry lately. I know I should be eating a healthy well balanced diet but I am not sure what really counts as ‘well balanced’. To be honest, before I became pregnant I didn’t have the best diet. My fridge still is packed with frozen pizzas, microwave dinners, chocolates and ice cream. I also know eating healthy means fruits, vegetables, and proteins, and whole grains. It’s just that those foods don’t appeal to me much…In fact, all I want to do is eat a frozen pizza and dig the biggest spoon I can find into that ice cream. So I’m wondering…do I only have to just eat healthy foods? Can I still eat all the foods I love and eat healthy too? Would it really be so awful if I eat pizza with a salad? I’ m not even sure I know how much food is a ‘healthy portion’. I know it’s important to give my baby the all the nutrients it needs and I am also concerned about eating foods that could be harmful to my baby. There really is so much to consider when eating for two. I could really use some advice…can I still eat the foods I love or should I change my eating habits altogether?
Undoubtedly many expectant mums have had different diets that they found worked for them. Most mums have had healthy babies even if their diets during pregnancy weren’t always the ‘healthiest’. Whether you are an expectant mum or have already been through ‘the pregnancy diet’ please share your
experiences with us so that mums like Laura can benefit from your experiences on what worked for you. Thanks, Shona x
