Maya, mum to Paul, 3 is expecting her second child in a few months and considering trying for a VBAC.
“When I was pregnant with Paul, I had planned to have a natural, drug free birth but we had a few complications with the delivery and I ended up with an emergency caesarean and just about every medical intervention under the sun! This time around I would really like to try for a natural birth I want, but I’m a bit nervous about it.
Although I know it is possible to have a VBAC and its fairly low risk, I’m worried that I’ll have a similar experience to last time, which was quite traumatic for me. I would prefer to have a planned caesar than go through the ordeal of a long labour only to end up in the operating theatre again.
I think it comes down to confidence, I would love to have the experience of a natural birth but I’m just not convinced my body is capable of it. I was wondering if there are any other women who have had a successful VBAC and would be willing to share their experiences with me. How common is it really? I know theoretically it is possible but I don’t actually know anyone who has succeeded in having a natural delivery after a caesarean.”
Have you had a natural delivery after a caesarean? Whatever the outcome, if you have experience in this issue please share your story and help Maya make a decision about her birthing options for her second baby. By answering a few questions you can help other mums who might be wondering if VBAC is the right choice for them. Thanks, Shona x
