Yvonne, mum to 2 year old Jasmine is wondering how to toilet train her daughter.
“My daughter Jasmine is 2 ½ and I think she might be ready to start potty training. I know she’s still pretty young but she’s dry for a few hours at a time during the day and she’s showing a lot of interest in the toilet and what goes on when we go to the loo. I think she’d like to have a try but I don’t know if I should get a potty for her or one of those plastic seats that fits over the toilet. She’s so little still, I think she might be more comfortable on a potty but I don’t know if using a potty now means I will have to spend ages weaning her off it later. Maybe it’s better to start as we mean to go on and go straight to the toilet!
I was also wondering if it’s best to just take her out of nappies and hope for the best or take a more gradual approach. Luckily we have wooden floors so accidents shouldn’t be too much of a problem to clean up when we’re at home but I’m worried about what will happen if we’re out. I would really appreciate some advice from other parents who have been there. How do you start and what are the main strategies you used to motivate your toddler to use the loo? I can’t wait for Jasmine to be out of nappies, I’m sick of changing them!”
How did you toilet train your toddler? Was the process a smooth one for everyone or was it a battle? If you have successfully potty trained your child (or if you struggled!) please share your experience and help Yvonne and others like her navigate the murky waters of toilet training. By answering a few questions you can assist other parents who may be facing a similar situation. Thanks, Shona x
