Judith, mum of 6 week old Leila is concerned about her
baby’s unsettled behaviour and inability to sleep, particularly after feeding.
“My daughter Leila is just over 6 weeks old and ever since she was born she’s been really unsettled all the time. She just screams and screams, more than any other baby I know and she vomits after every single feed. I feel like I’m going crazy, nothing seems to soothe her and the only thing that helps a bit is if she is upright with her head on my shoulder - as soon as I put her down in her cot she wakes up and starts screaming again.
I know newborn babies can be unsettled and cry a lot but Leila seems more unsettled than other babies I know. She won’t sleep for long periods either and it’s exhausting for me and my husband as she wakes up screaming every couple of hours at night and won’t go back to sleep until we pick her up and walk around with her. As soon as we put her down again she wakes straight up.
I was wondering if she might have reflux, I read a bit about it and it sounds like a distinct possibility but I’m not sure. I tried asking my GP but he was really dismissive about the idea and said all babies are unsettled and it might be wind pains. How do I know if my baby has reflux? I was hoping some other mums out there might be able to help – what were the signs of reflux in your baby? And what can I do to help? I don’t want to put Leila on medication if I can avoid it but at the same time she seems so miserable and it’s affecting the entire family!”
Do you have any experience with reflux in your baby? If
you have any suggestions that might help Judith please share your thoughts here and help her and anyone else whose newborn
might be suffering from reflux. By answering a few quick questions you can help
other families cope with the challenges of settling a newborn with reflux.
Thanks, Shona x
